Mathews Funeral Home confirms the death of Virginia Patton Moss

Virginia Patton Moss, the only surviving adult cast member from Frank Capra‘s 1946 holiday It’s a Wonderful Life has peacefully passed away at 97.

The former actress was famous for the role of Ruth Dakin Bailey in the Jimmy Stewart led-holiday classic which also starred Donna Reed, Lionel Barrymore, and Thomas Mitchell.

The late actress’ death was made official by Mathews Funeral Home in Georgia, which revealed that she passed peacefully of natural causes on Thursday.

Her onscreen daughter Zuzu from the holiday classic, Karolyn Grimes paid a tribute to her on Facebook with two pictures, one of her starring in the film and one took more recently.

Grimes wrote:

“We have another angel!”

“Virginia Patton Moss. She was 97 years old. She played Harry Bailey’s wife in the film, it’s a Wonderful Life! She is now with her beloved Cruse. She will be missed!” 

Cruse was Patton’s husband of 69 years who died in 2018.

An insight into Patton’s short-acting career

Patton’s career started when she was barely a teenager. Furthermore, she also designed women’s and children’s wear.

Her obituary revealed:

“With her strong commitment to family, she volunteered in her children’s schools, served as a boy scout and girl scout leader for 10 years, and helped youth activities at church,”

“Virginia lived for family and celebrated the achievements of her children and grandchildren.”

Over the years, the former actress also acted as the president of the real estate investment company, the Patton Corporation. Furthermore, she worked as a docent at the University of Michigan Museum of Art for more than 25 years.

Her obituary also noted that she was an accomplished pianist.

One of her last films was It’s a Wonderful Life which premiered when she was only 21 years old. She bid Hollywood goodbye when she and Moss got married in 1949.

She had only acted in four movies but moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan, to start a family.

Talking about acting, Moss said in a 2012 interview:

“I couldn’t see me doing that for my life.”

“That isn’t what I wanted. I wanted exactly what I am. Ann Arbor, Michigan, a wonderful husband, wonderful children, a good part of the community. I work hard for the community.”

The former actress is survived by two children, seven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
