Is Lisa Leaving Blackpink For An American Agency?
Lisa from Blackpink has reportedly rejected the contract renewal with the group’s parent agency YG Entertainment. This could mean that Lisa would no longer be a part of the acclaimed K-pop girl group. And so far, reports are suggesting that Lisa could be leaving the company for an American agency.
Days after Blackpink made history at the MTV VMAs by becoming the second girl squad in the world to win the ‘Best Group’ award, reports of Lisa rejecting YG’s offer of 50 Billion won (that’s over INR 310 crores) began surfacing. This sent their fans into shock, causing an internet frenzy.
Is Lisa really leaving YG Entertainment for an American agency? Does this mean the end of Blackpink? Here’s everything we know about the contract renewal controversy so far…
Contract Controversy Between Lisa from Blackpink and YG Entertainment: Explained
What’s going on with Lisa from Blackpink and YG Entertainment?
Blackpink debuted with it’s parent company YG Entertainment in 2016. Members Lisa, Jisoo, Jennie and Rosé signed a contract with the agency for seven years, as is the industry norm. The contract was up for renewal in August and it was widely presumed that the members would continue on with YG and renew their contracts.
In July, however, a Chinese news outlet shared that they faced scheduling troubles for Lisa’s appearance on a show because of uncertainty surrounding her contract renewal with YG.
Back then, YG Entertainment had issued a statement clarifying that the scheduling difficulties happened because of Blackpink’s then-ongoing Born Pink world tour and Lisa’s individual activities.
In August, when the contracts were up for renewal, reports claiming that Lisa had rejected YG’s generous offer of nearly 37 Billion won (INR 230 crores approx) surfaced. This was followed by another offer (of 50 Billion won) which was rejected again, thus making headlines once again.
On September 15, YG put out another statement clarifying that the discussions were still under way and requested fans to not believe in baseless rumours.
Shortly after, on September 20, a Taiwanese media outlet claimed that Lisa is considering offers from foreign agencies, including American and Indonesian ones, that are offering more lucrative terms. One promising contract is offering her copyright ownership, release of six albums, more brand associations and establishing of her own studio.
This has neither been confirmed nor denied by Lisa or her agency.
What does this mean for Blackpink’s future?
While reports of Lisa rejecting the contract renewal have been rampant, it’s important to note that there has been no confirmation yet about the other three members, Jennie, Jisoo and Rosé, renewing their contracts either.
On September 17, Blackpink concluded their massively successful Born Pink world tour at Gocheok Sky Dome, Seoul, and tearfully addressed the fans gathered in the audience. Jennie told the fans that Blackpink will continue to work harder in the future and Rosé said that the fans will be a part of them forever.
Many fans took this to be a cryptic way of announcing Blackpink’s end as a group since Lisa leaving could mean disbandment.
As of now, the status of all four members’ contract renewal remains unclear.
